Self Portraits are symbols of status. They are not easily obtained. And usually rare for people to have. Even though they are not necessarily expensive. They are a luxury and don't serve a lot of purpose other than being nice to have. Selfies are almost the opposite. They are so easy to make that they over saturate social media and diminish any value to them. Selfies are nice to have, but the more that exist the less they mean to anyone. Selfies are sometimes used as a joke.
Self Portraits are almost always taken care of to an extent. Its rarely ever forgotten about. In the same way, increasing the supply will decrease the value, but at the same time, thats more practice for the artist so better portraits and most artist will not have to time to continue to make self portraits.
